Leftovers never looked so…ridiculous!

Howdy, cupcake!

This week, I decided it was time to use what was left of my candy leftovers. I had some orange slices, Rolos, and chocolate chips. So, obviously I decided to make duck annnnnnd Princess Leia cupcakes. I mean, what else would I make?

I threw a C-3PO in there, too, just for kicks.

These are by no means the most sophisticated cupcakes I have made, but I think they’ll at least make you laugh– *crickets* –or maybe just smile?

(chhhhhhhh….Luke, you need to eat a cupcake.)

Once I ran out of Rolos, it was goodbye Princess Leia and hello ducks!

Well, that’s all folks. I’d like to end with the cutest shot my coworker took of his kids getting ready to devour the Cookie Monster cupcakes I made last week with my special guest Mike Brookbank. Check it out:

Next week, I’ll have another special guest in the kitchen and we’ll be tackling a new fun character. Stay tuned.

Until next time, keep calm and eat a cupcake!

Won’t you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?

Won’t you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?

Well, folks, this week I was honored to have my first ever cupcake guest getting creative in the kitchen. Freep’s very talented digital host Mike Brookbank wanted to experience what this cupcake fascination is all about. Of course, he was less than pleased when I presented him with my special guest apron:

What a good sport ;)

This week for cupcake madness, we decided to do a throw back to our childhood. Presenting Cookie Monster and Big Bird cupcakes!

These were pretty simple to assemble, which is nice if you have multiple people in the kitchen and want to actually enjoy conversation without having to be focused on every frosting detail. We’ve seen a lot of Cookie Monster cupcakes floating around the interwebs, so we decided to try our own hand at the furry, hungry monster. We also figured he’d want a friend, and Brookbank was all about Big Bird.

For Cookie Monster:

•Blue frosting with flower piping for a bit of a textured look

•Cookies and cream Hersey Kisses for the eye base

•Mini chocolate chips “glued” on to the kisses for the eyeballs

• Cookie Crisp to line his mouth, some crumbled to make it look like he’s demolishing some cookie treats

For Big Bird:

• Yellow frosting with tube piping for a feathered look

• Cookies and cream Hersey Kisses for the eye base

• Mini chocolate chips “glued” on to the kisses for the eye balls

• Candy corn for the beak, one for each part of the beak or orange slices cut in half

So much fun! Well, that’s all from me this week. I’m heading down to Newark, Ohio for my cousin’s wedding and we’re transporting her cake today. I need a bumper sticker that says “Brake for cake” or “Cake on board.” Cross your fingers for us!

Until next time, keep calm and eat a cupcake!-A

BURGER-RAMA!

3 burgercakes

Who doesn’t love a good slider?

I saw burger cupcakes as I was trolling through Pinterest last week and absolutely had to make them. I honestly had to do a double-take the first time I saw the picture; they looked exactly like actual burgers. Gosh, I LOVE food that looks like other food.

I couldn’t track down the exact blogger with the burgercakes, but these incredibly adorable ones from Bakerella are fantastic. Mine came out rather large, so maybe they’re more like whoppers. Go big or go home, right? ;)

So, enough chitter-chatter, let’s get down to the cold, hard, and delicious facts. These were so simple to make, they only require a little assemblage —>

For the bun: vanilla cupcake sliced in half
For the patty: brownies baked in the cupcake mold
For the lettuce & ketchup: green and red frosting

To complete the look, dab a bit of orange juice on the top of the cupcake and sprinkle it with sesame seeds. Even though these babies weren’t covered in sugary frosting bliss, the chocolate, vanilla and hint of orange complimented each other rather nicely.

If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can make mini cinnamon sticks for French fries. Ooh, you could make mini chocolate milk shakes, too!

Until next time, Keep calm and eat a cupcake! -A

Mark W. bow tie cupcakes

Alex Bahou and Mark W. Smith

Everyone, I’d like you to meet Mark W. Smith – - – - >

He is an amazing journalist, my good friend, and the subject of my latest cupcake post! (Don’t worry, we’ll get to those in a minute.)

Dubs, as we adoringly call him, recently took a position with USA Today and was all set to leave the Motor City. We certainty couldn’t let him go without a proper goodbye bash and since the Dubs is often sporting his beloved bow ties, I made him bow tie cupcakes!

I mean, they are not the most gorgeous cupcakes in the world, but I think that’s what gives them a quirky charm. As usual, Funfetti boxed cake mix and some canned frosting did the trick. I also used red slices to form the bow tie and secured them with a toothpick (they would fan apart otherwise.) I used dabs of frosting for the buttons to complete the dapper look.

So, whatcha think, cupcake?

I posted this to hold you over until tomorrow when I’ll be decorating some bacherlorette party cupcakes for my cousin-to-be!

Until then, keep calm and eat a cupcake!

Allo, cupcake!

Listen up, cupcake: I have an addiction.

If a desire to decorate cupcakes is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

I’m no expert. To be honest, I use box cake mix and canned frosting, but I love to decorate. My main focus will be fun, creative and humorous cupcake décor.

An Angry Birds cupcake? Sure.

A holiday inspired cupcake? I’m on it.

A cupcake that looks like a dinosaur? Why not!?

I’ll take suggestions from readers/friends and attempt to implement them each week.

Join me on my adventure as I navigate through the sticky and sweet trials and tribulations of cupcake decorating.

Alley-oop! Presenting my Final Four cupcakes

NCAA Final Four cupcakes by Motorcity Cupcakes

I don’t really watch basketball, but I do like cupcakes.

My friend suggested I decorate some tasty treats in light of the NCAA festivities. Well, I couldn’t say no.

Presenting my NCAA Final Four cupcakes. The mascots were particularly hard to sketch out, especially since Louisville and Kansas sport similar birds. Overall, I thought they turned out pretty funny. I drew a bracket on a paper towel to complete the Final Four look.

Just call me Miss Sophisticated ;)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy. Nothing too special for these babies, just box funfetti cake mix, Pillsbury frosting, M&Ms and a dab of creativity.
